cassiel spent most of their time in hell just watching. they stayed out of the way, stayed quiet and focused solely on their job. they couldn’t afford to stray from fathers mission, every day tensions between heaven and hell grew, and cassiel knew that sooner rather than later, their plan would come into fruition. their siblings would be back in heaven where they belonged and the family would be back together. maybe father would even show leniency towards lucifer and allow him passage to the silver city after all this time.

their were intricate writing on some of the walls of hell, and although angels knew every human language, this language was born of hell, so it was unknown to her. still, she found herself studying it often, trying to decipher what it might say.

hell was so far removed from the peace of the silver city, the tranquility and light of heaven was a stark contrast to this place. one would expect hell to be warm, but without the light of divinity shining down on them, cassiel felt cold whenever they were here. although they supposed that was the entire point, this place was created for the worst of humanity. for those burdened enough with guilt that divinity would never shine down on them.

“i don’t understand, what’s happening.” they said, standing behind lilith and looking back and forth down the vast corridors of the hall. cassiel had yet to step foot out of the palace in which lucifer and lilith resided. they didn’t want to know what horrors lay outside those walls. if the stories were anything to go back, it wasn’t pleasant. 

cassiel briefly wondered if perhaps their siblings had come, if they had brought the war straight to hell. it couldn’t be though, cassiel was sure that their father would have given them warning. prepared them for the fight. so this had to be something else. something intrinsically evil

doing as they were told, cassiel stood close by liliths side, awaiting further instruction, like a good soldier. they would never be hells soldier, though.

but of course, isn’t that why cassiel was doing all of this. why they’d left their post in heaven, come to hell, lied to their brothers and sisters. they loved the silver city, and they would do anything to protect it. their siblings would understand that eventually, cassiel was sure of it. they had to believe they were doing the right thing, that their fathers will was the right thing.

“ but what if you have to do the wrong thing to protect the thing you love? ”
